End-of-Semester Reflection

December 12, 2018

As we reach the end of another semester at Howard University, I’d like to wish you all congratulations. You are part of an incredible legacy and an unfathomably bright future because you are part of the Howard University community.

Indeed, we are One Howard—we heal from our challenges together and celebrate our wins together. As a community, we took a stand against sexual assault and other interpersonal violence on campus with the #HUStands campaign and pledge. While we stand against sexual assault, we also stand for each other. This fall, Healing at Howard continued as a place where all students, staff, and faculty are welcome to bring their questions and concerns about the University for productive dialogue. We have another big win to celebrate with our volleyball team, who recently brought home their fourth straight Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) volleyball championship, for which we should all be very proud.

In September, we soared 21 spots into the US News and World Report Best Colleges Top 100, claiming the #89 spot. Some of the largest factors contributing to the institution’s improved score this year were thanks to you. Howard's increased first-year student retention rate that is above the national average; our increased graduation rate that was 8 percent higher than the anticipated rate; increased SAT and ACT scores; and a freshman class of which 25 percent of the students hail from the Top 10 percent of their high school classes all helped boost Howard’s 2019 rank.

You see, Howard is what it is because you are who you are. The University wants to see you succeed. I want each of you to succeed. As you prepare for exams, study hard, but also eat well and get restful sleep. Take care of yourself during the winter break as well, setting aside time to mindfully relax and plan your success for the spring semester and beyond.

Enjoy the time you have with your loved ones over the holidays. We look forward to seeing you on campus in January!
